
Annual Rye Grass for Forage
Ryegrass is very palatable, high in forage value, and easy to grow.
High Yields of Quality Hay. High protein and fine leaves makes annual ryegrass an outstanding hay crop.
2 tons plus for two cuttings in the spring allowing you to double crop to sudangrass
Production:
- Seed 15-25 pounds per acre (lower rate for drilled seed) no deeper than 1/2 inch.
- Use up to 150 pounds of nitrogen preplant per acre.
- Use pop up fertilizer when planting with drill. 100-150# such as 16-20-0 fertilizer
- Top dress with up to 50 pounds of nitrogen per acre after each cutting of hay.
- Leave 1 inch or higher stubble for quick regrowth.
Diseases:
Crown rustuse resistant variety (red rust in spring while cutting for hay)
Advantages:
- Resists standing watermost tolerant of wet feet.
- High yields of dark green quality hay or grazing.
- Acceptance in Horse hay market
- Easy to farm. Note you will need sharp cutter bar as annual ryegrass puts up for hay like pasture hay.
Ideas:
Can plant with Berseem clover and crimson clover for increased protein. Berseem clover more tolerant of wet feet.
